By 1989, many Bob Dylan fans were convinced that Dylan had completely lost his songwriting muse. His last two albums, Knocked Out Loaded and Down in the Groove, were arguably the two worst works of his career. In what seemed to be an ominous sign, most of the songs on those discs were either covers or tunes he wrote with others. The result was his strongest album in nearly a decade – though in a typical Dylan move, he jettisoned two of the best tracks ("Born in Time" and "Series of Dreams") to make work for a couple of clearly subpar songs. Regardless, Oh Mercy is a landmark album. 8. ‘Time Out of Mind’.

This is absolutely stunning. I will never grow tired of this genius. It's not just the quality of the album, it's also so damn epic because his critics were starting to label him washed up and a has-been after a slow start to the 70s, then he comes out and produces this. This is not just by far the best Dylan album, but the greatest and most artistic album ever recorded. A truly a masterpiece of a genius. For me, also, the album that started my Dylan phase. That first side of the album with Tangled, Simple Twist, and Idiot Wind was brilliant. The album that started my love of Dylan's music. So many amazing lyrics.

Bob Dylan & The Band recorded over 100 tracks during this time, and while most of them circulated for years on bootleg recordings, it wasn’t until 1975 that they were officially released. The album is notable for its sound, which was a distinct turn away from the type of songwriting Dylan had been exploring on Blonde on Blonde and Highway 61 Revisited. The music on The Basement Tapes is characterized by its roots or Americana feel-a stark contrast to the trends of rock music at the time.
