OK - so Shape Shift was re-released and is a classic but please don't forget Urban and Free When we listen to music no matter where we are - we are free are we not ?That track is just as good as the other thanks Chris and Dave - Acid is not necessary for matter or energy :)
Definitely one of the more accessible SUF releases and very DJ friendly. Plenty of 303 layers, with Shapeshift being the more hard edged and abrasive. Great stuff.
Global Progression
A great early collaboration from London's acid techno scene heroes, Chris Knowles and Henry Cullen. Urban & Free starts out with a beat and some bubbly and squelchy snippets of acid just rolling on with an occasional robotic vocal going "urban and free". Around halfway through this repetitive acid sequence is dropped and from there on it doesn't stop. One of those moments where a monotonous lead hypnotizes you into the track and never lets go again! Pretty samey all the way through and very simple structure wise, but fun nonetheless. It doesn't get as complex and 303 ridden as many other SUF acid drenched tunes, but stays on the heavy acid tip. Still funky, just more linear than a lot of other work done by these two. The B side is one of my all time favorite track ever released on the Stay Up Forever label collective. Starts with a thumping and dominant minimal techno beat and an acid hook. Slowly building with and around this simple arrangement, it draws you in with the infectious beat, commanding bass line and hypnotic acid, making it hard not to move along. Just when you are starting to get bored of the same old sound, and when you think nothing will ever happen, at the five minute mark a spiralling, completely whacked out acid lead is thrown atop the percussion, and from then until the end the track combines the hard drum kick with a furiously uncontrollable melody. To make it all better, as the music progresses, the acid gets harder, heavier, crazier and its intensity gradually increases as the track approaches its end. Just when you think (hoped) this acoustic paradise would never end, the melody work steadily starts to fade out, leaving only the percussion to lead the track to its finish. This is a fabulous one to mix live, due to enough space left with only the percussion and few effects, so you can toy around with it however you please until the absolutely wicked acid avalanche kicks in! What a ride! Well worth adding to your collection, even though it's not as popular as many other releases from the imprint.
