Dr.Ring Ding & Kingston Rudieska - Ska ’N Seoul (2014,Rudie system)Ska n’ Seoul, the latest offering from South Korea’s Kingston Rudieska, is a 5 song EP collaboration with the reggae/ska/dancehall legend, Dr. Ring Ding. The two hooked up while the German trombonist was touring Asia in the summer of 2013. By attracting bigger names in Jamaican music every year, there is no doubt Korea is experiencing a ska and reggae renaissance with Kingston Rudieska at the very forefront of it all.The album pays homage to a wide spectrum of musical styles; from a rootsy, church-organ driven version of Swing Low Sweet Chariot to classic ska originals written by both parties. The first track, Johnny Come Home, is a dark, jazzy cover of the famous Fine Young Cannibals’ song. Dr. Ring Ding sings in a tone a bit smoother than his usual whiskey growl which fits well with the tune’s sentiment. There is a little grit that remains, though, which is nicely mirrored by muted trumpet solos throughout. The next couple of tracks, Discovery of life and Your Sweet Kiss are both Ring Ding originals that any fan of Kingston Rudieska or Dr. Ring Ding will find familiar and fun. Discovery of life is sung in Korean by Sugar Suk Yuel and punctuated with a Ring Ding dancehall rap. Your Sweet Kiss, meanwhile, is a Dr. Ring Ding offering with bouncy horns and backup vocal doo wops. The one instrumental thread running throughout the album is the organ, which has a starring role in Swing Low Sweet Chariot. The song begins in a gospel style. Dr. Ring Ding preaches while the band hollers in the background. A nice rocksteady beat develops behind the traditonal lyrics, and the jazz organ returns for some preaching of its own. The band kicks into a brisk ska tempo behind solos and takes us home in a funky gospel jam. This song is a beautiful melding of various styles and instruments. Kingston Rudieska’s typical boldness in musical experimentation and Dr. Ring Ding’s expertise in genre and color combine to breathe new life into a classic tune.As they did on their last LP, 3rd Kind, Kingston Rudieska plays around with the dub genre on the last track Worried Dub, which is a version of Johnny Come Home. It’s the perfect ‘cherry-on-top’ to the well-crafted EP. As Kingston Rudieska has continued to grow and sharpen their chops, each album is exciting to listen to in the context of their entire discography. Ska n’ Seoul is no exception. The very fact that the legendary Dr. Ring Ding is featured is reason enough to give this tasty morsel a listen. His mastery of styles and musicality have lent Kingston Rudieska a new spin on ska, while, at the same time, they sound like themselves more than ever.
