Produced by Eno and Rhett Davies, it was originally released by Polydor Records in December 1977 in the UK and by US Island soon after. Brian Eno’s fourth solo album, originally released on the Polydor imprint in December 1977, surreptitiously pulled off the not-inconsiderable feat of uniting both factions as an almost incidental by-product of its casual otherness. Topped and tailed by ‘Here He Comes’ and ‘Spider And I’, Side Two of Before And After Science utilises what, for Eno, are quite conventional, linear melodies. But in their understatement, a wellspring of implied emotion broils beneath the still surface.

Before and After Science is really a study of "studio composition" whereby recordings are created by deconstruction and elimination: tracks are recorded and assembled in layers, then selectively subtracted one after another, resulting in a composition and sound quite unlike that at the beginning of the process. Despite the album's pop format, the sound is unique and strays far from the mainstream. Eno also experiments with his lyrics, choosing a sound-over-sense approach. When mixed with the music, these lyrics create a new sense or meaning, or the feeling of meaning, a concept.

Brian Eno is an underrated genius. Sure, the word genius is one of the most overused, clichéd ways to praise people who are just capable of making great music when in reality it should be used for, like, 20 people per century. The truth, however, is that Before And After Science’s structure is that of a pop album; short tunes, plenty of singing, rich instrumentation and your standard song structure do not an ambient album make, despite the inclusion of two instrumentals (which are way too structured to be called true ambient, anyway). Whatever the nature of the album, the melodies are too irresistible to be ignored. Brian writes songs with the catchiness of a seasoned pop songwriter and the texture of a classical composer.
