Niccolo Brown I've heard some bruising techno in my time, but "Struggle & Emerge", commissioned by the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision to examine the relationship between the Dutch and water (no, me neither) has certainly enabled Lakker to vent the noisier parts of their spleen. Assembled from a large variety of field recordings, tracks range from the machine gun beats of "Maeslantkering Gating" which could terrify a Perc fan to the variety of brain-strafing ambience Shapednoise specialise in.
Lakker were provided a curated set of material from The Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision, the Dutch national audiovisual archive. They could only sample these materials which all pertained to the theme of the Dutch and water.
Following last year’s breakthrough album Tundra, Lakker return to R&S with a very special new project. Lakker were commissioned by the RE:VIVE Initiative to create a new conceptual work solely sampling field recording, TV and radio broadcasts from the Dutch National AV archive, The Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision. The curated material provided all related to and was representative of the theme the Dutch and water
Successful concept albums are difficult to pull off, but the new album from Berlin’s Lakker beats the odds. The scope is ambitious: the relationship between the Dutch and water. The sources are original: only vintage field recordings and TV and radio broadcasts are used, as requested by the surprising commissioners, the RE:VIVE Initiative. And yet, despite what one might envision from such a setup, the sound remains pure Lakker: dark, moody and electronic . In this they succeed. Last year’s Tundra was a solid collection, but Struggle & Emerge is a statement strong enough to inspire interest outside of the album: a laudable achievement for one of electronic music’s newest luminary acts.
