This album of Jazz at The Philharmonic is probably distinguished as the really first collection of contemporary, modern jazz artists playing together. The musicians are: Charlie Ventura. Charlie Parker, Willie Smith, Lester Young, Shoeless Joe jackson, John Birks.
Recorded on 28 January 1946, Jazz At The Philharmonic Volume II captured the historic concert featuring Charlie Parker, Lester Young and other jazz titans. In September 1945 Billboard announced that Norman Granz was negotiating to undertake a full blown coast-to-coast tour with his Jazz At The Philharmonic touring package. Billboard reported that Granz would emcee the whole affair, with the tour finishing up in New York playing Carnegie Hall – live jazz was taking on a whole new dimension. Putting a tour like this on the road was a challenge and Granz had little experience – he had just turned twenty-seven years old. Before heading out of town, JATP gave a concert at the Philharmonic Auditorium in Los Angeles on 26 November. In 1950 Mercury released three 78s in an album they called Jazz at The Philharmonic, Vol. II from the 28 January 1946 Los Angeles concert.

Another album in the VSP series had "I Can't Get Started" along with the 1947 versions of "How High the Moon" and "Bellboy Blues". Since we only had a few of the VSP albums, I didn't even know about "Endido" until I had a conversation with another collector in the middle 70's. I had to wait until the release of this box set to finally hear Endido, over 20 years later.

By 1957 the once-popular all-star traveling jam session Jazz at the Philharmonic was primarily performing in Europe but fortunately producer Norman Granz documented some of the concerts. This out-of-print LP matches together trumpeter Roy Eldridge, altoist Benny Carter and the complementary but contrasintg tenors of Coleman Hawkins and Don Byas with pianist Lalo Schifrin, bassist Art Davis and drummer Jo Jones.
