With its playful vocoded vocals and three really catchy synth phrases, 'Don't Stop The Rock' by Freestyle is my all-time favourite electro track (for the record, relegating Cybotron's 'Clear' and Herbie Hancock's 'Rockit' to 2nd and 3rd place). The track's obviously inspired others too as the chorus was sampled on the '92 remix of Altern 8's 'Infiltrate 202' and the first line of the chorus (or a popular interpretation of it at least! "Freestyle kickin' in the house tonight") was adopted as the motto of Brighton's Big Beat Boutique clubnight in the late 90's. This CD features several remixes not only of 'Don't Stop The Rock' but also of other tracks from the mid-80's - three more released as Freestyle and two originally released by "Pretty" Tony Butler under his own name. The mixes cover various styles but are generally breakbeaty and between 125-135 bpm (with the exception of AK1200's D&B remix that's up in the 170's). I like Friction & Spice's thoughtful Detroit-style reworking of 'Count Me In' and the deep pulsed bass and bubbling acidline on D-Love's contribution but my favourite remix here - and the most dancefloor-friendly - is the Toxik Twins' mix which makes good use of the original tune and chorus and adds a throbbing bassline, some pumpin' breaks, an acidline and big build-ups on the breakdowns. After ten nu-skool versions, though, it's great to hear the two untouched original versions at the end of the CD.
