The Function cut is the tune of the hour for me at the moment! I barely ever listen to the Silent Servant contribution, as David Sumner brings an almost ten minute warm, deep Detroit cut, that'll quickly transform your poor mood into something occupied with, and fond of the pleasures of good company! What a track, a crescendo of lush pads, groovy and bass heavy, slick passages with subtle detailed changes, endlessly echoing drum booms which seem to be falling behind into an aural void of infinite depth, and emphasized bleeps, which add, parallel with the beaming and sunny feel of the track, a dose of mystery and melancholy. When that second pair of dubby drum rolls makes grand entrance seconds after the seven minute mark, this becomes a one way ticket to paradise, as if it already wasn't one to begin with. Wow, and I mean that. I would have never expected Function to come up with something as monumental and hypnotic as this. I just hope this makes it onto that Sandwell District album which has been in the pipe line for a while. The Regis edit of the Silent Servant track is a great cut, though not as nearly as distinct as the previous one. Soundwise very similar to the Silent Servant tunes we heard on SDSMP2; subterranean, with pounding bass lines, lots of background free space packed with sonorous hisses, loud sweeps, and natural and perceptible movement of air parallel to or along the other elements of the track. Some high pitched crystal effects are dropped together with an extra background pad, elevating the track to ethereal hights. Overall, this sampler is less dance floor friendly than the other one I'd say, and while overall I prefer the second installment more, the Function track here blew me off my feet, mesmerized me like the jewel of the Nile. I really do need, and want, more of that stuff guys. Ya hear, David?
