Odetta Sings Ballads and Blues is the debut solo album by American folk singer Odetta, first released in April 1957. Like much of Odetta's early work, Ballads and Blues combines traditional songs (. spirituals) with blues covers. Some songs on this album were also recorded for Odetta & Larry's 1954 album The Tin Angel. The initial vinyl release has tracks 1-8 as side A, then tracks 9-16 as side B (the "Spiritual Trilogy" being counted as one track, a medley).
Odetta's debut album was a strong, confident effort featuring just her and her guitar on 16 tracks, most of which were traditional in origin. In its day, it was quite an influential recording; Bob Dylan, in fact, once cited this record in particular as the one that made him decide to trade in his electric guitar and amplifier for an acoustic guitar. Several of the songs would find their ways into the repertoires of subsequent folkies, and even some folk-rock bands

Odetta is a 1963 compilation album by American folk singer Odetta. Odetta is the first official compilation of Odetta songs. It features songs from The Tin Angel, Odetta Sings Ballads and Blues, At the Gate of Horn and Odetta At Town Hall although not necessarily versions from those albums. It had a poorer reputation than the above-mentioned original albums, being seen as thrown-together by the label. This LP has subsequently not been released on CD like those three albums.
This LP was released each year until about 1967. Matrix, Runout (A): TR 1010-A. Matrix, Runout (B): TR 1010-B.
Sings Ballads and Blues went on to influence a generation of folk artists and to inspire those who fought for equality in the South and beyond. The album’s prophetic message still resonates a half-century on. Sings Ballads and Blues Odetta. Released in 1956, Odetta’s debut album heralded both the folk boom of the ‘60s and the early stirrings of the civil rights movement. Beyond its place in history, this album remains a work of uncommon emotional and artistic power. Odetta’s astoundingly deep voice and dramatic phrasing owes as much to the operatic style of Paul Robeson as it does to the raw blues of Leadbelly. Her renditions of Deep Blue Sea and ’Buked and Scorned are at once stately and shiver inducing
