Donovan and Most teamed up to record Donovan's next album on Rak Records in 1977. Arista Records picked up the distribution rights in the US. In a distinct change from Slow Down World, the songs on Donovan were an attempt to reach mass audiences again. The songs feature a contemporary sound and, with the exception of "Maya's Dance", generally avoid the gentle balladry of Donovan's previous work. Despite these measures, Donovan failed to chart in both the US and UK, and signalled the end of Donovan's attempts to reach a mainstream audience

The World of Donovan is a compilation album from Scottish singer-songwriter Donovan. It was released in the United States (Epic Records 31210) in 1972 and did not chart. Another album titled The World of Donovan was released by Marble Arch Records in the United Kingdom in 1969. In 1969, Epic Records released Donovan's Greatest Hits to compile Donovan's late 1960s hits in one collection. For fans who wanted to delve a little more into Donovan's catalog without getting each of the albums, Epic released a two LP compilation titled The World of Donovan in 1972. Celia of the Seals" and "Song of the Wandering Aengus" had been released as a single the year before. Donovan was not released in the United States, The World of Donovan marked the first album release of the songs in the United States.
Donovan and Epic Records responded by releasing Donovan's Greatest Hits in January 1969, which went on to become Donovan's highest selling album, reaching on the . In response to the success of Donovan's Greatest Hits, Hickory Records assembled another compilation of Donovan's 1965 Pye Records recordings and titled it The Best of Donovan. Like Like It Is, Was, and Evermore Shall Be, this compilation was released with psychedelic cover art that fit in with Donovan's late 1960s image rather than his 1965 image as a folk singer.
