Ultimate Painting were an English alternative rock band, formed in London in 2014. The band was composed of co-frontmen Jack Cooper and James Hoare, with a revolving cast of rhythm sections. The band were named after a painting made by the Drop City art community in Colorado in the late 1960's.

It appears they don't operate that way, and Dusk, the third Ultimate Painting album in as many years, hit the stores in late 2016. By this time, Hoare and Cooper had perfected their writing and recording techniques, melding their two styles into a blend that makes it hard to tell when one guy stops and the other starts. Their voices and guitars twine together in perfect harmony and the richness of this fusion helps make the sound they get on Dusk to be the warmest and most welcoming of their short, busy career.

Dusk is the third album from London-based duo Ultimate Painting, a ten song set that expands the group’s sound from their self-titled debut and their critically acclaimed sophomore effort Green Lanes, about whose tunes Pitchfork raved their deceptively simple interplay slowly worms into your synapses. Dusk heads along the same path, albeit in a slightly different direction, forging to new territory by heading inward. Dusk was once again recorded to tape by guitarist James Hoare in his London flat.

Ergo Dusk, the third outing from Ultimate Painting, which, after several listens reveals itself to be a sugar coated pill with much bitterness at its core. Based around the core of Jack Cooper and James Hoare of indie stalwarts Mazes and Veronica Falls respectively, Ultimate Painting have come to eclipse the bands from whence they came. Consequently the mind isn’t grabbed until the final number, ‘I Can’t Run Anymore’, which means that almost a third of the album wafts innocuously by. And yet that seems to be Ultimate Painting’s . this isn’t a band designed for crashing climaxes but for something more considered. Nonetheless, taken as a whole, that’s not too bad a strike rate for a band taking incremental steps in getting better with each outing.
