Drunk Horse's second Man's Ruin album, Tanning Salon/Biblical Proportions, is an interesting departure from the band's self-titled debut album of 1999. Drunk Horse was a reckless, ballsy, riff-oriented hard rock party album that drew on such late-'60s and early-'70s influences as the Rolling Stones, the Faces, and the Doors. Those influences haven't disappeared from Drunk Horse's music; however, Tanning Salon/Biblical Proportions is more eccentric and experimental than its predecessor

Oakland natives Drunk Horse feature Elijah Eckert (vocals/guitar), John Niles (guitar), Cyrus Comiskey (bass), and Cripe Jergensen (drums), and perform amped-up hard rock boogie akin to ZZ Top and Thin Lizzy-gone-stoner rock. Signed to the Bay Area-based, now defunct Man's Ruin label, the group released a number of singles, a 1999 self-titled album, and 2001's Tanning Salon/Biblical Proportions before the label went under. Picked up by Tee Pee Records, the band returned in 2003 with their third album, Adult Situations.
Author Ned Vizzini's novel Be More Chill, about a guy who takes a pill called a squip that makes him cooler, was partly inspired by "AM/FM Shoes", a song from Tanning Salon/Biblical Proportions. He writes that "'AM/FM Shoes' is about a guy who feels like a loser, except he has special shoes that play the radio, and when he puts them on, he becomes the coolest guy around.
