If this is where the light shines through, we're in the right place. JFH Staff's Additional 2 Cents. It may not be a home run like a couple of their previous albums, but from start to finish it is thoroughly enjoyable, and even inspirational at times. For the band's 10th studio album, Switchfoot makes a few nods to past sounds while making a few strides into new territory (like including rap with Lecrae's guest spot on "Looking for America").
In what’s become a Switchfoot tradition, the day after Where the Light Shines Through drops, Switchfoot will put on their 12th annual Bro-Am charity surf contest and concert in Encinitas, California. To see our community come together is an incredible experience
This is where Where the Light Shines Through comes in. A sizable portion of listeners didn't care for Fading West because it was seen as Jon Foreman and Co. taming themselves a lot and losing their edginess. Granted, it also served as the soundtrack for their rockumentary of the same name, but that didn't excuse it in most fans' minds. As the frontman and chief songwriter, Where the Light Shines Through chronicles pain, but it’s not a sonic pity party. Apparently, there’s an anchor in this writer’s soul. This anchor is hope, which bookends the album with the opening parenthetical statement that hope deserves an anthem and the closing song, Hope is the Anthem. One thing I’ve always appreciated about this artist is he appears as if he measures his words carefully. While all surfers love to have fun, this one can get somber and serious on a dime, or so it seems . There’s a lot of good ear and heart food on this album. It satisfies the Switchfoot fan. Is it another breakthrough? An instant classic?
