Even by the Innocence Mission's modest standards, We Walked in Song is especially spare in presentation- we don't hear drums till the final chorus of the fourth track- but draw from a deep tradition of solitary music: from Appalachian folk and gospel hymns to breezy bossa nova and the third Velvet Underground album. In their less captivating moments- which emerge in the album's third quarter- the Innocence Mission can succumb to a certain folk-circle innocuousness ("A Wave Is Rolling"), but even these more typical turns are adorned with intriguing touches- like the orchestro-flamenco flourishes on "Over the Moon"- that enhance We. Walked in Song's air of muted majesty.

The Innocence Mission is the eponymous debut studio album by the band of the same name. It was recorded in six months in several studios in Los Angeles, California, including the Kiva, Oceanway Recording, and the Sound Castle. The album cover features the 1894 painting Impromptu Ball by Eva Roos. The album was re-released digitally on May 19, 2009 by A&M Records. Fronted by Don and Karen Peris, the Sonny & Cher of folk-pop, the Innocence Mission began plying their wispy, gentle trade in the late 1980s, reaching their peak of popularity in the first half of the '90s. They've taken breaks since then, and worked on some extracurricular projects, but they never went away or broke stride. WE WALKED IN SONG attests to the latter, as Karen's fragile, Natalie croon trips lightly through a woody glen of acoustic guitars and warm, organic keyboards.
