The Main Squeeze is an album by American jazz organist Jimmy McGriff recorded in 1974 and released on the Groove Merchant label. It's a collection of short, sharp and oh-so-sincere funk workouts performed with both style and skill, the album simply plays its cards too close to the vest, controlling the groove but never giving in to it". The album also turned out another huge hit in McGriff's "All About My Girl", establishing McGriff's credentials as a fiery blues-based organist, well-versed in gospel, soul and "fatback groove". McGriff recorded a series of popular albums for the Sue label between 1962 and 1965, ending with what still stands as one of his finest examples of blues-based jazz, Blues for Mister Jimmy. Based on this fine album alone, there's definitely a need for reissuing the several soul-infused albums McGriff cut for Solid State. Mixing combo and big-band dates, the organist resided at the label during the latter half of the '60s, scoring hits like "The Worm" and updating his early Jimmy Smith-inspired organ jazz sound with the groove-and-horns aesthetic of James Brown and Stax.
