One of Stevie Ray Vaughan’s earliest breaks came in 1983 when David Bowie invited him to participate in recording sessions for his new studio album, Let’s Dance. The two met in July 1982, when Bowie saw Vaughan and his group Double Trouble perform at the Montreux Jazz Festival. The group had played brilliantly, but several blues purists in the audience booed loudly, presumably upset by either the volume or the group’s stylistic take on the blues. Bowie, though, had been impressed by Vaughan. Vaughan was subsequently replaced by guitarist Earl Slick, whose work with Bowie went back to the singer’s 1975 album, Young Americans. Though we don’t have the opportunity of seeing Bowie and Vaughan perform together, several taped rehearsal performances exist, including this excellent version of Let’s Dance, on which Vaughan contributes his characteristic stinging Strat work.

In January 1983, David Bowie invited Stevie Ray Vaughan (after spotting Vaughan and Double Trouble performing at Montreux Jazz Festival in July of the previous year) to record guitar for six new tracks he’d written for up-coming release, Let’s Dance. With the album a success, Bowie was keen for SRV to join his group for the subsequent Serious Moonlight Tour. However, with Vaughan reluctant to leave Double Trouble, (who had just finished recording their debut, Texas Flood) Bowie’s management offered to let the group open the show on select tour dates as a compromise.
In January 1983, David Bowie invited Stevie Ray Vaughan to record guitar for six new tracks he’d written for his upcoming release, Let’s Dance. Vaughan’s powerful and unique guitar work brought a fresh sound to Bowie’s music, most famously on songs like China Girl and the album’s title track.
Vaughan met Bowie at the 1982 Montreux Jazz Festival. After SRV's performance, Bowie was so impressed that he later said, " completely floored me. I hadn't been so gung-ho about a guitar player since seeing Jeff Beck. Of Bowie, Vaughan said, "To tell you the truth, I wasn't very familiar with David's music when he asked me to play on the sessions. David and I talked for hours and hours about our music, about funky Texas blues and its roots. What it looks like is a Bowie Hits album. But with SRV playing. And the sound is perfect it was done in a studio
