From 1964 to 1974 the Orchestre National De France was named Orchestre National De L'ORTF (or Orchestre national de l'office de la radiodiffusion-télévision française, Orchestre national de France) conducted by Maurice Le Roux (1964-1967), Jean Martinon (1968-1973), Sergiu Celibidache (1973-1974). Paul Dukas, Jean Martinon, Orchestre National De L'ORTF - Symphonie En Ut Majeur - Ariane Et Barbe-Bleue (LP, Gat). La Voix De Son Maître.
Orchestra: Orchestre National de l"ORTF. Conductor: Jean Martinon. Composer: Camille Saint-Saëns. Audio CD (July 13, 2005). That symphony is, to me, so very "French sounding," because, to my ears, it sort of shimmers in a most delightful and lush way reflecting why Saint Saens can be such an enjoyable listening experience. Jean Martinon and the National Orchestra de l'ORTF play, as I remembered, all of these works most splendidly. No, these symphonies ain't Mahler and no they don't require deep serious "brain-cramp" inducing contemplation; however, these symphonies by Camille Saint Saens are a real listening pleasure being so very easy to mentally grasp that I just allowed myself.
The Symphony No. 3 in C minor, Op. 78, was completed by Camille Saint-Saëns in 1886 at what was probably the artistic peak of his career. It is also popularly known as the Organ Symphony, even though it is not a true symphony for organ, but simply an orchestral symphony where two sections out of four use the pipe organ. The composer inscribed it as: Symphonie No. 3 "avec orgue" (with organ).

This week it's French composer Camille Saint-Saens Symphony in F "Urbs Roma". I like all of Saint-Saens symphonies and think it's too bad the only one that seems to be popular is the third. I hope everyone can give this one a listen. D Smith, Rogerx, AClockworkOrange liked this post. I'll listen to the Martinon and Orchestre National de l'ORTF from the set of Saint-Saens complete symphonies. Manxfeeder, D Smith, AClockworkOrange and 1 others liked this post.
