Hadestown, written by Anaïs Mitchell, is a musical adaption of Mitchell’s folk-opera concept album of the same name. It reimagines the Greek tale of Orpheus and Eurydice in a post-apocalyptic, Great Depression-esque society. The show was originally performed as a small-budget . performance in Mitchell’s home in 2007 before being properly adapted into a studio album in 2010. An EP featuring 4 live recordings, entitled Why We Build The Wall, was released in October of 2016, with a full cast recording released on October 6, 2017. However, the full cast recording actually does not feature the entire score, as it was the most they could fit on a CD. The show will have a run at the Citadel Theatre in Edmonton, Canada from November 11 to December 3 2017 with Amber Gray and Patrick Page being the only cast members reprising their roles, after which it will be transferring to Broadway.

The folk singer discusses retelling an ancient myth at a time of ‘political horror’. Why do we build the wall, my children? growls Hades, king of the underworld, in Anaïs Mitchell’s folk opera Hadestown. This demon is a slick business guy, a billionaire steel tycoon who sings in an oily, impassive bass. The response comes from a thrawn chorus of the desperate and the damned: Because we have and they have not, Because they want what we have got, The enemy is poverty, And the wall keeps out the enemy, And we build the wall to keep us free. Orpheus wants no part in it – he’s a dreamer, a bard, a charmer, convinced he can live off the beauty of rhyme and song – but his sweetheart Eurydice is lured when Hades beckons her by name. A station hobo called Hermes shows her the way down with a conspiring, weary drawl.

Celebrated singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell and director Rachel Chavkin have transformed Mitchell’s acclaimed concept album into a genre-defying new musical that mixes modern American folk music with vintage New Orleans jazz to reimagine a sweeping ancient tale. Please note: this production contains strobe-like effects throughout.
