His third for the label again strings cheerful electro percussion to well-defined grooves - an enviable ability to switch from the warm Carl Craig-esque sounds of "Two the Point" to the minimal beats of the aptly titled "Repeater" before ducking back to the fluid artificial intelligentsia of "Blue Water.
But it’s as Metamatics that he’s most revered. With his third album under the guise it’s easy to see why. That pseudonym might sound as dry as double algebra, but this is anything but. Sure, as a fan of early electro pioneers like Numan and Kraftwerk, there’s an overtone of stark minimalism but, as it shifts through the body-popping title track, the hiccuping robot army on the rise of ‘No Condimentz’ and the sleepy digital atmospherics of ‘Blue Water’, this also never forgets to sound joyous and almost innocently funky. Lee Norris might be obsessed with machines but he’s made an album that’s also packed with chilled, caressing sounds and warm squelches. Managing to do what artificial intelligence experts and sci-fi geeks have long dreamed of, he’s given his precision-tooled, gleaming-chrome robotics some soul.
