Album · 2014 · 10 Songs. Opening with the plodding riffs of Electric Man, Great Western Valkyrie is the Rival Sons’ biggest and baddest studio effort, a no-holds-barred assault of ’70s-influenced rock, swirling psychedelia and overdriven guitars. Rival Sons are a throwback to the spirit of the 1970s in more ways than one. Not only do they revel in those buzzing guitar riffs and lilting vocals so popular from that time, but their approach to recording the actual music is reminiscent of an older way of thinking. Rather than rewrite and overanalyze, the boys walk into the studio with a few lyrics or a melody and go from there. Where I’ve Been, the only ballad on Great Western Valkyrie, sails along with smooth, creamy vocals and dark yet cathartic lyrics that makes this one of the more passionate songs on the album. The last song on the album, Destination On Course is one of Holiday’s older songs, twisting up into an asymmetrical, psychotic, slow jam. The backing vocals of Kristen Rogers are as sensual as they are mystical. Great Western Valkyrie is a strong addition to the Rival Sons’ previous albums and fans of the band will not be disappointed.

The CD was recorded with producer Dave Cobb at LCS Studios in Nashville, Tennessee. I think Scott really expanded his approach in these songs and you can definitely hear it in the moodier tracks, while on the hot tracks you can hear him forcing his aviary of Firebirds to drink moonshine. There are some serious house burners on 'Great Western Valkyrie' but there are also a couple where thesis dictated more subtlety from the arrangement
