Some altercations occurred during the recording of the album. Black Grape were originally meant to record "Mad Dogs and Englishmen", but the band withdrew due to a conflict between members; Space recorded the song instead. Twentieth-Century Blues: The Songs of Noël Coward pays tribute to one of the 20th century's finest songwriters, with performances by contemporary and classic British artists, including Vic Reeves, Space, Sting, and Damon Albarn and Michael Nyman. Texas and the Divine Comedy provide entertaining but slightly misguided updates on "Parisian Pierrot" and "I've Been to a Marvelous Party," which respectively try to fuse trip-hop and Hi-NRG dance rhythms to Coward's literate lyrics.
Lyrics for 20th Century Blues by Noël Coward. We've reached a deadline, A press headline, Every sorrow. Blues value Is news value Tomorrow. Blues Twentieth century blues Are getting me down. Blues Escape those weary Twentieth century blues. Why, If there's a God in the sky, Why shouldn't He grin High Above this dreary Twentieth century din? In this strange illusion, Chaos and confusion, People seem to lose their way. What is there to strive for, Love or keep alive for, Say, 'Hey, hey!' Call it a day? Blues Nothing to win or to lose, It's getting me down.
