Faultline is the second album of the American Avant-rock band Birdsongs of the Mesozoic, released in 1989 by Cuneiform Records. Their first since the departure of co-founder Roger Miller, Faultline is a transitional work for the band. Miller was replaced by saxophonist Steve Adams, who soon departed to join the saxophone quartet ROVA and was in turn replaced by Ken Field. Both Adams and Field recorded material for Faultline. The introduction of a saxophonist also tilted the band slightly towards jazz.

Faultline was the first Birdsongs of the Mesozoic album to be released following the departure of founding member and painist Roger Miller. They expanded briefly to a 5 piece featuring 2 saxophonists, one of whom, Ken Field, is still playing with them today. On this album their style also evolved, with large chunks of it recalling the formal structures of Art Zoyd. The revised line up gave BOTM a more varied sonic pallette, although their characteristic influences (minimalism, chamber rock, contemporary avant garde and ambient) remain essentially the same

Saxophonist Ken Field stepped in to take his place, helped to finish the album, and subsequently became a permanent member of the band. The addition of reed instruments marked a fundamental change in the band's sound. Instead of a rather architectural, if raw, sound based on the interaction of twin keyboards, Birdsongs of the Mesozoic began to sound a little bit jazzier, if no less structurally rigorous and aggressive. On "Coco Boudakian," guitarist Martin Swope sounds uncannily like Arto Lindsay; the title track rocks out in a blocky but complex way.
