Goo is the sixth studio album by American alternative rock band Sonic Youth, released on June 26, 1990 by DGC Records. For this album, the band sought to expand upon its trademark alternating guitar arrangements and the layered sound of their previous album Daydream Nation (1988). The band's songwriting on Goo is more topical than past works, exploring themes of female empowerment and pop culture.

Album · 1990 · 31 Songs. Often the most provocative of the band’s three songwriters, Kim Gordon is particularly unbridled on Goo. On Kool Thing, she takes a satirical shot at rapper braggadocio with the help of Chuck D and a patriarchy-eating riff. More bracing is the mix of humor and horror in Tunic (Song for Karen), a surreal yet tender take on Karen Carpenter’s battle with bulimia.

A remastered version was released in 2005. Goo was the first album released after the band signed to major label Geffen Records. Many songs on Goo start and end abruptly; a departure from Daydream Nation which was known for its long, psychedelic guitar intros and outros.

Any doubts as to the continuing relevance of Sonic Youth upon their jump to major-label status were quickly laid to rest by Goo, their follow-up to the monumental Daydream Nation. While paling in the shadow of its predecessor, the record is nevertheless a defiant call to arms against mainstream musical values; the Geffen logo adorning the disc is a moot point - Goo is, if anything, a portrait of Sonic Youth at their most self-indulgently noisy and contentious, covering topics ranging from Karen Carpenter ("Tunic") to UFOs.

However, amidst all the polysyllabic polish, Coley offers a bit of truth: "ome long-time fans were already croaking that the band was moving in a rockist direction, leaving behind the avant-noise roots that had marked their early history . Indeed, if 1991 was the year punk broke, then 1990- the year Sonic Youth supposedly bit the wax tadpole- was when punk decided to step off the ledge. No doubt there were folks at the base of the wall, trying to cushion the impact. And, of course, they all ended up with egg on their face, and Goo in their lap.
