The Last Waltz is the second live album by the Band, released on Warner Bros. Records in 1978, catalogue 3WS 3146. It is the soundtrack to the 1978 film of the same name, and the final album by the original configuration of the Band. It peaked at on the Billboard 200. The Last Waltz. On April 16, 2002, a box set reissue of the album arrived in stores, including everything released on the original with additional tracks taken from the concert. The performance of "Helpless" by Neil Young features backing vocals by Joni Mitchell; Paul Butterfield plays harmonica for Muddy Waters on "Mannish Boy"; Dr. John plays congas on "Coyote" and plays guitar on "Down South in New Orleans"; the entire ensemble sings back-up on the closer, "I Shall Be Released".

Believe it or not, though, I’ve listened to The Last Waltz through worse, and through better. I’m a bonafide The Band fanboy. I’ve listened to almost everything they’ve ever recorded, for the exception of a few bootlegs, which they didn’t record. As much as I love listening to this 40th Anniversary collection of a wonderful group’s final concert, it sure changes a lo. nd unfortunately one of the bootlegs I’ve heard was the bootleg of this very concert  . For instance, Genetic Method/Chest Fever on this collection is a minute of synth music and the minute of Chest Fever that has no singing. During the original concert, they were a little off vocally. But to top that off the whole song sounds nothing like it originally did in concert. As far as I know, Chest Fever has never been included on the album.

The Last Waltz was advertised as the Band's "farewell concert appearance," and the concert saw the Band joined by more than a dozen special guests, including Bob Dylan, Paul Butterfield, Neil Young, Emmylou Harris, Ringo Starr, Ronnie Hawkins, Dr. John, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, Muddy Waters, Ronnie Wood, Neil Diamond, Bobby Charles, The Staple Singers, and Eric Clapton. The musical director for the concert was the Band's original record producer, John Simon  . The film begins with the Band performing the last song of the evening, their cover version of the Marvin Gaye hit "Don't Do It", as an encore. The film then flashes back to the beginning of the concert, and follows it more or less chronologically. The Band is backed by a large horn section and performs many of its hit songs, including "Up on Cripple Creek," "Stage Fright," and "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down.

Scorsese's camera explores the interactions onstage in the making of music. Offstage, he interviews the Band's five members, focusing on the nature of life on the road  . The film is brilliantly directed by Martin Scorsese, who captures this incredibly powerful and remarkable performance with skill that can't be described as anything other than amazing. This film looks absolutely stunning.
