The DG recording of La Fanciulla del West recorded in 1977, under conductor Zubin Mehta, has much to recommend. I purchased it after the recent death of Carol Neblett. The DG recording had the advantage of being recorded in the course of a heralded new production at the Royal Opera, Covent Garden, and it preserves most of the cast of those performances. Zubin Mehta was already a consummate pro at Puccini, bringing out all the all the dynamics of the score and whipping the orchestra toward the climactic peaks The singers of the sixteen smaller characters who inhabit the world of the Polka Saloon, are unknown to me, but are Royal Opera stalwarts who prove their worth. This is the opera that made me appreciate Puccini again after being bored by endless productions of Boheme and Butterfly (and the occasional Tosca and Turandot).
