Once in a while a record company compiles an album and does it to perfection. Dexter Gordon's CD, Settin' the Pace, is one such example. Savoy brought together all fifteen masters of Gordon's Savoy 78s with Gordon as leader and added eight alternate takes to complete the compilation. That makes this issue the most thorough grouping of Gordon's Savoy recordings to be brought to the market. In addition, the liner notes include several wonderful photos of the young Long Tall Dexter from Savoy's files and an extensive essay (12 pages) by Dan Morgenstern. There are many compilations of Gordon's Savoy sessions on the market. This one puts the others to shame.
