Shocked to find how poor this pressing is. Lots of surface noise (somehow side 4 is nearly unaffected) and very muddy. The base and mids blend together resulting in a serious lack of clarity, while the highs are occasionally struck by sibilance. Great shame, as this is one of my favorite albums. Especially strange, as I own several other Radiohead albums that sound fantastic. Stay away from this pressing.
Forgot about this and pulled my copy out recently. I bought this from a used bin a few years back and it was pretty cheap. Despite being pressed by Rainbo, it doesn't sound too bad. Just a hair off center on a couple of sides, but the overall sound is quite good, without the nasty non-fill Rainbo pressings often have. Truthfully my go-to copy of this album has always been the original '97 CD mastering, so I'd say just get that rather than wading through all the various reissue LP pressings for one without defects.
I have the Capitol re-release from 2008 and it sounds completely amazing, the bass on Airbag is the one tune amongst my 1000s of records I play to guests. They are always amazed. So I have no idea what the gripes are about - crap TT'?
honestly mine is amazing - on my LP12 at Rega 6
You got a good copy, this was pressed at Rainbo and their QC is all over the place with a lot of bad copies floating around.
Just bought a brand-new pressing of this in mid-February 2017 and it sounds absolutely amazing. Not sure what people are complaining about, but perhaps it's time to upgrade your turntable instead..
How could one tell which they had? I purchased mine late Feb 2017 but it only says 7243 8 55229 1 8 on the sleeve. No XL. It sounds good to me. Perhaps that's a sign of my hearing more than the quality of the recording. :)
I also picked up this album recently and think it sounds great. From reading the other comment thread I realize I have a copy that has this (Capitol) jacket and barcode, but the 2016 Parlophone LP's inside.
It's most likely the XL 2016 reissue you picked up, this is out of print.
Check this website to compare the sound quality of the original 1997 and this 2008 repress:
Wow I might steer clear of this version then.... cheers all
I bought this pressing in 2011 or 2012 and it sounds fantastic to me. Rich and clear. I keep hearing complaints about these Capitol pressings but I'm not sure why, maybe like others have said they've pressed so many that the stampers are getting worn down and producing lower-quality pressings.
The first pressings of these were really good - if you get one of the early pressings from 2008, (it will have the Capitol hype sticker on the shrink wrap), it sounds really nice. However, they have pressed TONS of these and if you are buying one new today, (regular shrink), it will sound rubbish purely for the fact that they have pressed so many. In summary - a great remaster, but only if you buy one of the early pressings. Don;t buy it new today.
To me it sounds just fine. I've never heard the original British versions. I understand , everyone says this exact edition sounds like crap.Oh well... I had to persuade myself that since this is a very ambient and atmospheric albums it's OK for it to sound not very sharp :) P.S. There are reissues nowadays which sound a lot worse.
Sounds very muffled, very disappointed in this reissue. The CD sounds a lot better.
Interesting -- some copies of this are floating around with the Capitol jackets, but have Parlophone records inside.
Guess I lucked out as I bought it from a big US ebay seller and it's Capitol with UK made Parlophone discs and sounds great. I only realised when I went to add it to my collection and couldn't understand why people thought the Capitol press was rubbish!
Capitol doesn't have the rights to issue Radiohead albums anymore due to the EMI deal last year, so they're probably using leftover Capitol jackets with newer Parlophone records.
I've just bought a Capitol w/ Parlophone LP inside. What's the deal you think? Also, I've a hard time imaging that unless RH or Godrich never touched the boards that the reissue could be worse. Not in their DNA. Of course Capitol just wants the breadand would reissue it every year- like the Stones do!!
The A side says "I like you, you are a wonderful person" and the B side says "I'm full of Enthusiasm , I'm going places"
I picked up a copy today and the jacket is Capitol and the actual records are UK Parlophone pressings, very pleased!
Yes, I am in the same boat..... Capitol on the Jackets, but Parlophone pressings inside. example from A side, Matrix: 85522g1 1A (by hand), then - NO DATA 02 A-1-1- (machine stamped) Also some other writing which I am not able to make out clearly in the runout area..... hmmm, any one have any other thoughts on this?
I picked up a copy with the capitol jacket. Delighted to see the Parlophone UK pressings in separate sleeves inside. Super quiet pristine quality. Cheers!
I'm a huge Radiohead fan! When I had the money finally I rushed out and purchased a turn table and ALL the Capital Re issue Radiohead vinyl albums I could buy. I was so excited but they are all lifeless! The music is there of course but it's dead sounding. My CD's all say Parlophone and they blow the vinyl right out of the water. Sad Panda.
Could it be your equipment? Perhaps the records were dirty? Many records come out of the factory rather contaminated.
This USA issue IS trash. No high-end, drums and percussion are all muted, bad stereo image. Shakers and aux percussion are almost inaudible on Paranoid Android, can't hear the hi-hat throughout, the whole thing is just dull. The CD actually wins in this scenario! I have been told the original Parlophones are leagues better.
yep, this repress sounds like crap!!
The original is by leaps and bounds better than the reissue. Don't waste your money.
My copy sounds like crap.. :/
I completely agree. Didn't near the original pressing, but I can't imagine it sounds better than this one. -
I think my copy of this sounds great. I think it's a quality repressing.
I am guessing they printed alot because I just bought one at Urban Outfitters ( Hipster Clothing Store.) in Roseville California.
You give it 2/5 based on where you bought it?
Reception seems half and half for this pressing, but I think it sounds great.A lot more open/dynamic than the CD, and I don't deny that the original pressing sounds better, but you can't go wrong with this. The packaging is superb, the soundstage on this pressing is what really impresses me.I haven't noticed any noise on any of my Radiohead capital copies (granted I only have this and Kid A) but I think people need to clean their records better. Put a flashlight over your record and see how dusty it is when you thought it was clean -- brush cleaning is all you need for stuff like this.
What songs did you notice a lot of extra noise? On mine it's the beginning of Exit Music, Let Down, and Lucky. I thought maybe my copy was just getting old, and I was planning on buying a new one, but if this is something that was there when I first purchased it I guess I don't need to buy it again.
Does anyone know just how 'limited' these are. How many have been printed?
They aren't limited. They have been repressed many times since 2008. There was just a repress about a couple weeks ago. The "limited edition" is just some marketing scheme by Capitol Records.
