Floodland is the second studio album by English gothic rock band the Sisters of Mercy. It was released on 13 November 1987 through Merciful Release and WEA, with Elektra Records handling the US release. After the release of the band's debut album, First and Last and Always (1985), members Craig Adams and Wayne Hussey departed the band, leading to the band's disbandment. As a result, band frontman Andrew Eldritch formed a side project, The Sisterhood, and recorded new material with them
Floodland is the second studio album by English rock band The Sisters of Mercy. It was released on 13 November 1987 by Merciful Release and Warner Music Group. The recording of the album began in January 1987, roughly two years after the band disbanded following the departures of band members Craig Adams and Wayne Hussey. Much of the lyrics of the album refer to this split, with The Cold War being the other major theme, thanks to Eldritch’s residence in Hamburg for the writing of this album.
While the earlier Sisters releases were noisy, sometimes harsh affairs, Floodland is filled with lush production (thanks to Meat Loaf writer/producer Jim Steinman and the New York Choral Society) and lyric imagery that is both scary and glorious. The slower tracks, like "Flood" and "1959," are some of the best ethereal sounds goth has to offer, and the downright regal "This Corrosion" is one of the best songs of the genre. A definite milestone.
Floodland is the second studio album by English rock band The Sisters of Mercy. It was produced by Larry Alexander, band frontman Andrew Eldritch, and Jim Steinman while being recorded at Power Station Studios in Manhattan, Strawberry Studios in Manchester, The Wool Hall in Bath, and AIR Studios in London.
The album itself differs from the rock-oriented First and Last and Always almost completely. It seems to be more progressive, containing 6 songs over the 6 minute mark while First and Last and Always only had one song over the 6 minute mark (Some Kind of Stranger). However, this is not a bad thing, it builds up the song and creates an atmosphere that differs from that of First and Last and Always. It was a B-side from the last lineup of The Sisters of Mercy.
