Maybe second-album syndrome doesn’t apply to conglomerations of traditional music heavyweights, but if it does then the Gloaming have a clean bill of health. It isn’t for nothing that the Gloaming are gushingly called innovators and ground-breakers. They genuinely seem to bring traditional music down a path that isn’t all that familiar to it. What’s more, they’re succeeding.

The Gloaming’s debut album, entitled simply The Gloaming, was produced by Thomas Bartlett and mixed by Patrick Dillett (David Byrne & St. Vincent). It was finished in the summer of 2013 during the build up to a series of sold out concerts at prestigious venues in London, Amsterdam, Paris & New York. In early 2011, the five musicians first met to explore their collaboration at Grouse Lodge Studios in Ireland’s County Westmeath, an hour northwest of Dublin.
Mojo Magazine picked up on the enigmatic quality of the music, describing An album of dark beauty and unnerving enchantment. It debuted 1 on the Irish Album charts. The five came together to explore new music at Grouse Lodge Studios is West Meath in early 2011.
The new album was recorded in December 2015 at Real World Studios, produced by Thomas Bartlett (Sufjan Stevens, Glen Hansard) and engineered and mixed by Patrick Dillett (David Byrne & S. incent, The National). While Ireland is a small nation, the diversity in styles between traditional music players from different counties and parishes a few dozen miles apart is a thing of no small wonder.
