That album, Weird Era Cont. was supposed to be a surprise and actually make the idea of an ‘Album Release Date’ fun, Cox wrote at the time. The tracklist spans haphazard dance-punk ( Operation ), full-fledged shoegaze ( Vox Celeste ), Can-inspired psych ( Dot Gain ), ambient ( Cicadas and Weird Era ), deconstructed piano-pop ( Vox Humana and Moon With Cartridge ), and more, putting this band’s unmistakable stamp on each sound.

Microcastle/Weird Era Continued. Atlanta, Georgia art rockers Deerhunter followed their critically acclaimed sophomore album Cryptograms with 2008's even more straightforward effort Microcastle, a collection that stripped some of the experimentalism from their shoegaze re-imagining sound.
Weird thing about this album is how each track made some sort of impression within the first seconds. Certainly hazier and more psych oriented than their latest stuff, very interesting to see the evolution now that I'm growing into their catalogue. Very pretty and welcoming melodies, with a certain invinting melancholy. Microcastle is authentic Deerhunter. The drums, the hypnotizing guitar riffs, the impressive bass, all of it is just so captivating. It reminds me a lot of a more improved Cryptograms. Deerhunter unleashes their full potential on this one. 1. 2y. cwmDJ. 92. sublime indie excellence, very talented songwriters and musicians, an album of mood swings, a group that should be huge.
Microcastle/Weird Era Cont. is one of the best rock albums of the 2000’s. It isn’t often a band is able to achieve a level of urgency a la the Pixies and simultaneously churn out potent indie gems that withstand the test of time. Such pretentious descriptions come at the result of gorgeous chord progressions and hazy soundscapes that one could attribute to a wide variety of musical acts from the 80’s.
Deerhunter: Microcastle/Weird Era Cont. Fresh on the heels of his deliciously spooky Atlas Sound solo album, the bizarre and beguiling Bradford Cox outdid himself again on his Brooklyn-based band's third record. Like many of their peers, Deerhunter are enamoured of shoegazing. Unlike most, they swim with the genre's morbid undertow, pitching their seductive noisescapes not as a means of transcendence but as an asphyxiating yet beautiful cocoon. I want only to see four walls made of concrete," sighs guitarist Lockett Pundt on Agoraphobia.
