O A e o Z (also known as A e o Z, or "A" e o "Z", Portuguese: The A and the Z) is an album by Brazilian rock band Os Mutantes. It was their first record without founding member Rita Lee, and marked a shift in their sound to progressive rock. Recorded in 1973, but shelved until 1992, this was Arnaldo Baptista's last studio record with the group. All tracks written by Arnaldo Baptista, Sérgio Dias, Liminha and Dinho Leme.

Essential: a masterpiece of progressive rock music(41%). In this album the band sounds like an exprienced Progressive Rock one,like in the long opening "A" e o "Z",a GENESIS-ELP hybrid with Classical references and good work on mellotron and organ. From now on the band sounds like early YE. 'Rolling Stones'' features deep bass work and long Hammond solos,like YES having KEITH EMERSON.

The audio was poorly digitally mastered, therefore there's a enormous lack of presence in the sound. That might explain the grooves in the record, which are very weird, they look like a lot superficial.

No recording dates given, but since Arnaldo and Sergio are both present, it would make sense for it to have been recorded in-between Mutantes E Seus Cometas No País Do Baurets and Tudo Foi Feito Pelo Sol, as Arnaldo was gone by the time of the latter.
As I was there as producer assistant, it was recorded in mid 1973 at the Eldorado Studio, in 16 tracks, São Paulo, BR ( With love, Pena Schmidt, 2017)
