Catalogue d'oiseaux by Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992). Jocy de Oliveira-Carvalho (1936), piano. Composed between 1956 and 1958, it was first recorded by Messiaen's second wife, Yvonne Loriod (1924-2010). This Vox recording from 1972 appears to be the second complete recording. Vox departed from their usual format of three records per box set and spread this recording over four records to allow for a greater dynamic range. In concert appearances, Zehn is a bit more selective in presenting Catalogue d'Oiseaux and is seldom required to perform this long work at a sitting. That does not mean, however, that he doesn't know the whole work, and Zehn's complete traversal of Catalogue d'Oiseaux is one of the most valuable contributions that the budget Arte Nova label has made to contemporary music recording

Catalogue d'oiseaux ("Catalogue of birds") is a work for piano solo by Olivier Messiaen composed of thirteen pieces, written between October 1956 and September 1958. It is devoted to birds and dedicated to his second wife Yvonne Loriod. The work was premiered by Yvonne Loriod on 15 April 1959 in Paris, Salle Gaveau, for the concerts of the "Domaine musical" organized by Pierre Boulez. For these pieces, Messiaen did not want to be limited to the evocation of the bird of which each of it bears the title.
